Bali is overrated. And at the same time, we understand why people keep coming back.
There is something hard to describe: the contrast between digital nomads with laptops and the daily ceremonies that locals perform as if the internet did not exist. Shrines at every door, flowers offered at dawn, rituals that are part of everyday life. This is not culture for show.
Java is out of this world and almost nobody talks about it as loudly as they should. Mount Bromo at sunrise - you stand on the edge of the crater, surrounded by clouds of smoke and lava fields. Tumpak Sewu waterfall cascades like a curtain from the cliff. Yogyakarta with Borobudur and Prambanan - the largest Buddhist and Hindu temples outside of India.

Overrated and soulful. Depends on where and how. Ubud means rice terraces and temples. Canggu is surfers and cafes. The east of the island is silence and ceremonies. Bali rewards those who go beyond the clichés.
Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, Borobudur. For those who want the real Indonesia. Java leaves a mark - volcanoes at dawn, waterfalls in the jungle, and temples that remember more than all of us combined.
Quieter than Bali. Rinjani is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the region. Gili Islands - three small islands with no cars, turquoise water and turtles.
For the experienced. Komodo dragons, diving in Labuan Bajo, and otherworldly Flores landscapes. This is Indonesia that requires more time and planning, but offers experiences available nowhere else.
Three islands, zero cars, crystal water. Gili Trawangan is parties and diving. Gili Air is peace and yoga. Gili Meno is silence and turtles. The boat from Lombok takes 20 minutes - and you feel like you are at the end of the world.
Enough for Bali or Bali and Lombok. Java needs its own block.
Bali and Java are the optimal combination. Time for truly different Indonesias.
Flores, Komodo, Sulawesi. That is when Indonesia for the experienced truly begins.
